Cavaliers, Knights take Pre-Conference Meets

By Peter Asciutto

A break in the summer heat was welcome news for the two hundred-ninety cross country runners that descended upon the hills of Chuck Morehead Park. Overcast skies kept the temperature below 80 degrees for the Rocky River and Yadkin Valley pre-conference meets last Tuesday.

Rocky River

The Rocky River Boys kicked things off with the Cuthbertson Cavaliers, led by the one-two punch of Darion Horner (19:23) and Conner Glair (19:48), taking the victory.  Cuthbertson, the defending conference champs, had a team low of 20 points.

West Stanly placed two runners in the top ten to finish in second with 67 points.  Johnathan Thompson took 3rd in 19:56 and Kirby Carpenter finished 10th in 21:16.

North Stanly, host of the meet, placed 5th with Steven McClure finishing 16th in 23:30. Coach Drew Laucher said of his young team, "They worked really hard, our lack of depth, having only 6 runners, hurts us. I look forward to getting these guys to push each other and take on some RRC competition."

Cuthbertson's' girls, last seasons RRC champs, won the second race of the day with Megan Kiss taking the victory in 23:40.  A mile into the race, Kiss missed a turn, ran fifty yards off course, retraced her steps and quickly regained the lead. The Cavaliers had scored 31 points.

West Stanly took second with 66 points.  The Colt's lead runner Kayla Redmon crossed the finish line in 25:14  placing 4th.   North's Megan Hunsucker ran a strong 24:16 to take second place. The Comets took third with 75 points. Coach Laucher commented,  "I was really impressed with Megan's 2nd place finish, Jenna Huff picking herself up and finishing in 11th despite a spill at the first mile and Holli Chandler's 16th place finish. I'm looking to build our 4-5-6 spots this season."

Yadkin Valley

Gray Stone's Harrison Latimer showed he came into his senior season ready to run with his 18:57 victory on perhaps the toughest cross country course in the state.  Latimer gave it all from start to finish to break nineteen minutes in the first meet of the season. With teammates Eldon Zacek (19:51) and Quenton Parsons (20:53) finishing in 3rd and 6th, Gray Stone won the meet with 32 points.  The Knights are the defending 1-A State Champions.

South Stanly, with top ten finishes from Austin Springer (20:18-4th) and Alex Thompson (21:37-9th), placed second with 76 points.  Albemarle, led by Ben Melo (22:19-19th) finished 8th with 209 points.

The Gray Stone girls showed they are poised to make a run for the state title with a very solid team showing.  The Knights took six of the top seven spots to easily win the meet with 18 points. Janna Featherstone crossed the finish line in 23:18 for the victory with teammate Illa Jones taking second in 23:46.  Chatem Central's Holli Gaines took third in 24:02. Gray Stone's Caroline McLeod (24:10-4th), Amber Watkins (24:34-5th), Hunter Latimer (24:35-6th) and Jennie Wagner (24:38-7th) rolled through the finish line in the cardinal singlets with impressive times for this early in the season.

South's Erin Thompson was eighth with a 25:15. The Rebel Bulls placed third with 78 points.  Albemarle, with newcomer Bailey Holshouser placing ninth in 25:27, was fifth with 141 points.

West Sweeps Oakboro Meet over Berry Academy and North Stanly

By Greg Asciutto

Led by senior Matt Poplin’s 18:46 first place finish, the West Stanly Colts dominated North Stanly and Berry Academy with a fifteen point-score at Tuesday’s cross country meet. Following Poplin, teammates Kirby Carpenter (19:31), Tyler Ridenhour (19:52), Clay Calvert (20:11), and Jonathan Thompson (20:24) simultaneously crossed the finish line without competition from either of the other two squads, giving the Colts a perfect victory. Jeff McClure of North placed sixth at 20:47 and was followed by two Berry runners, Darry Hill and Bill Ngha at seventh and eigth. The Comets finished with fifty-five points and Berry Academy with sixty-seven.
In the girls’ race, sophomore Holly Chandler of North Stanly sprinted her way to a 23:28 victory over Micalyne Zimmerman (23:55), Berry Academy’s sole runner in the top ten. The Lady Colts proved to be nearly as powerful as their men’s squad, filling in the third through tenth spots (with the exception of fifth: Jenna Huff, NSHS). Brooke Benton (24:02) and Amandolin Webb (24:24) paced off one another for the majority of the contest, Benton edging her teammate in the final lap around the lake. Congratulations to the West Stanly Colts for yet another sweep in conference competition.
